Both the envoys have records of success in helping settle long-running violent conflicts -- Mitchell in Northern Ireland and Holbrooke in the Balkans.

Olmert spoke to Obama about the situation in the coastal enclave, where Israel waged a 22-day military campaign against the Islamic Hamas movement, and said preventing arms smuggling into Gaza was critical to maintaining a cease-fire, according to a statement on the prime minister’s Web site.

Obama told Abbas he wants to work “as partners to establish a durable peace in the region,” Palestinian Authority spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said by phone from Ramallah. Obama told Abbas the call was his first to a foreign leader, Abu Rudeina said.

That is why Gaza exists: because the Palestinians who lived in Ashkelon and the fields around it – Askalaan in Arabic – were dispossessed from their lands in 1948 when Israel was created and ended up on the beaches of Gaza.
